Sustainable Management Via Energy Exploitation Of End-Of-Life DAIRy Products In CyprUS (DAIRIUS)
Objective
The DAIRIUS project concerned the production of energy from expired cheese products in a two-stage anaerobic reactor. The anaerobic co-treatment of expired cheese products with other agro-livestock wastes, apart from being a more environmentally friendly method of processing these wastes, also leads to the simultaneous production of energy in the form of biofuels. The prevention of the deposit of this waste in landfills, contributes to the reduction of the phenomenon of climate change in accordance with the national legislation of the Member States of the European Union and the European Directives (e.g. 99/31/EC).
Pilot Plan Implementation
As part of the project, a pilot plant was designed, built, and operated by the company Green Technologies Ltd. The pilot plant was transferred to Cyprus, where biogas production experiments were carried out with complete success, through anaerobic co-treatment of expired cheese products with other agricultural waste.
Project Partners
Six members from two different countries (Cyprus and Greece) participated in the program as partners. Among them, three companies (Green Technologies Ltd, RTD Talos, Animalia Genetics), a large industry (Charalambidis Christis) and from public bodies the University of Patras (Chemical Engineering department) and the Ministry of Agriculture of Cyprus (Environment department).
Funding
The project was funded by EU (LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance 2010 -LIFE10 ENV/CY/000721)
